Davis, CA is located in northern California.

Formerly known as Davisville after Jerome C. Davis – a prominent farmer who sold off part of his land for the construction of the California Pacific Railroad – Davis was a farming community known for its agriculture and animal husbandry. The city is located in Yolo County, California, west of Sacramento, northeast of San Francisco and north of Los Angeles. Incorporated on March 1917, the city maintains a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. Davis can be divided into; South Davis, Downtown Davis, North Davis, Central Davis, West Davis and the Surrounding Area.

Self-acclaimed as “The Bike Capital” since bicycles are a major means of transportation and it has more bicycle riders than anywhere else in the country. Picnic Day In Davis:

The artsy city of Davis has so much to offer its residents and visitors like the annual Picnic Day; held every 3rd Saturday in April, it is the largest student hosted event in USA, featuring a parade with the UC Davis Marching Banding at the center and a Battle of Bands which ends when the last band stops playing and over 100 events including fencing, water sports, magic shows, etc.

University Of California, Davis:

In 1905, the University Farm Bill was passed by the California State Legislature and Davis was selected out of 50 other locations by Governor George Pardee to be as the site for the University of California’s University Farm. In later years, the name of the farm was changed to the Northern Branch of the College of Agriculture. In 1959, the farm was then upgraded as the 7th University of California Campus, the University of California, Davis.

Seen as a city within a city, UC Davis is the main reason for the city’s fame as the university is responsible for the city’s growth and status. Car use is restricted on campus grounds with a ban on student car ownership.

UC Davis Arboretum:

A 100-acre botanical garden and research center located along the banks of the old North Channel of Putah Creek, the arboretum was founded in 1936 and features 17 gardens and collections including Lois Crowe Patio, the Arboterum Terrace Garden, Conifer Desert, etc. The UC Davis Arboretum is free and open 24 hours every day to the general public.

Whole Earth Festival:

This annual festival which is held every Mother’s Day weekend is hosted by UC Davis students in association with the Associated Students of UC Davis, the Experimental College, and the university. It has 3 stages and lasts for 3 days, promoting environmental responsibility.

Davis Toad Tunnel:

Constructed in 1995, Toad Tunnel is a wildlife crossing for toads.

Animal lovers were worried about toads getting crushed when trying to leap from the dirt lot to the reservoir and as a result, a 21 inches wide, 18 inches high tunnel was built underneath the Pole Line Road. Unfortunately, the toads refused to use the tunnel and when the tunnels were lit to encourage use, they died from the heat.

The toads that got through were picked off by birds that had begun to understand the concept of the toad tunnel.

Davis Farmers’ Market:

Held every Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning, the Farmers’ Market has farmers from all over Davis selling fresh farm produce like eggs, fruits, vegetables, dairy and others with baked goods and homemade dishes. Wednesday evenings in the months of March through October, the market hosts an event, “Picnic in the Park” where the market functions together with music, diner, drinks and fun with the townspeople.

Robert And Margit Mondavi Center For The Performing Arts:

Located within the University of California, Davis campus, the Mondavi Center is a theatre which draws in a large audience. The center features diverse art from dance and theatrics to ballet and contemporary music and more. The Mondavi Center has 2 halls; the 1,801 seat Jackson Hall and the 250 seat Vanderhoef Dtuio named after university professor William Jackson and former chancellor Larry Vanderhoef respectively.

Davis Transmedia Art Walk:

The art walk is a free self-guided public art tour that includes 16 sculptures, 15 galleries, 23 public murals and museums in downtown Davis and UC Davis. Guided art tours are available by appointment on Saturdays and Sundays.

Jan Shrem And Maria Manetti Shrem Museum Of Art:

Located on the UC Davis campus, the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art preserves and uphold the legacy of the university’s fist generation art faculty. The museum features exhibits of renowned artists as well as an annual exhibition of works by graduating students. Entry is free and tours, lecture and weekend art studio activities are hosted in the museum.
