The city of Livermore, California has had several names throughout its history including Livermore’s, Liver Ranch and Nottingham. Livermore is located in Alameda County on the Eastern edge of the San Francisco bay area and has a population of around 90,000 inhabitants.

William Mendenhall founded Livermore and he named the city for his good friend and local rancher Robert Livermore. The city was incorporated in 1796.

Livermore is mostly a suburban community although it does retain some of its farming, wine growing and ranching roots. Residents of the city are both blue-collar workers and Professionals. Many of the professionals work for one of the laboratories in town since the city is the home of the Lawerence Livermore National Laboratories and also the California site of the Sandia National Laboratories.

One of Livermore’s claims to fame is that it is the home to the world’s oldest working light bulb, a 4 watt light bulb that has been burning for over 100 years.

Livermore has a wide range of activities for its residents to enjoy. There are a large number of parks for those who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors. There are also some shopping centers, theaters, clubs, and some nice restaurants

Livermore is a thriving city with over 90 different neighborhoods. Here is a look at a couple of those neighborhoods.

  • Arroyo Road/Marine Avenue: The Arroyo road/ Marine Avenue neighborhood is one of the pricier neighborhoods in Livermore. This neighborhood is made up mostly of 3 bedrooms, 2 bath single-family ranch-style or contemporary homes. Most of the homes in this neighborhood were built between 1979 and 1985.
  • Ulmar: The Ulmar neighborhood is made up of a combination of families with school-age children and highly educated executives. Most, but not all of the homes in this neighborhood are single-family dwellings. The neighborhood is very family-friendly and has a strong sense of community with good public schools and a nice park nearby.
  • Springtown: The Springtown neighborhood of Livermore dates back to 1963. The neighborhood is mostly made up of mid-sized single-family homes. The neighborhood is made up mainly of professionals and families with school-age children.

The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District consists of 11 elementary (k-5 and K-8) schools as well as 3 middle schools (6-8) 2 comprehensive high schools and 3 alternative High schools. There are also a number of private and charter schools in Livermore.
