The city was incorporated in 1887 and its persona has changed many times over the years. At one point in time, Los Gatos was important to the lumbering trade, it then became an agriculture center and then changed to a haven for an artist. The city encompasses 11 square miles. Los Gatos has a dense suburban feel where most residents own their own homes. The downtown area has restored many of its Victorian homes and has a pedestrian-friendly design.

- Vista del Monte: Vista del Monte is an upscale neighborhood in East Los Gatos. The homes here are larger single-family homes as well as some small apartment buildings. The homes here are somewhat older with many of the homes built between 1940 and 1969 with the home and the yard nicely maintained.
This is a family-friendly neighborhood with excellent schools and a strong sense of community. It also has an 11-acre park with three different trails for people who enjoy spending time outdoors.
