Placerville, CA is located in northern California.
Once known as “Old Dry Diggings” and later “Hangtown” Placerville is the county seat of El Dorado County, California. With a population of less than 11,000 this little town located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains covers an area of only about 5.4 square miles.
Placerville has a rather rich and colorful history earning it’s the original name of “Old Dry Diggings” during the gold rush and the name “Hangtown” after hanging 3 men who rode into town and open fire. In 1854 the town changed its name to Placerville at the urging of some of the local churches and the temperance movement. Placerville was also part of the Pony Express line.
The area around this town also sports several vineyards that are mostly family-run.

Today Placerville is a historic landmark and a town that continues to embrace its colorful history.
Part of the town still has many old buildings that were erected during the gold rush and there are numerous historical markers on Main Street informing residents and tourists aware of many of the significant historical events and people associated with the town.
For Example, the town’s old hanging platform is still standing complete with “Willie” a commemorative mannequin hanging from the hanging tree, reminding residents of the town more violent past.
The town even has a legendary food dish that originated in the town and is called “Hangtown Fry.” This dish is made up of eggs, bacon, and oysters.
This is a beautiful little town with a slightly suburban feel. The main street is friendly and there is a real sense of community here. The slower pace of life that Placerville offers makes this a great town to raise a family. Compared to the larger California Cities the cost of living here is reasonable.
Placerville is also known for its excellent schools with dedicated and caring teachers. Most residents who attended school in Placerville feel they received a top-notch education.

This is a small town with small-town values and therefore doesn’t have much nightlife although the town is known for its great food and wonderful restaurants. As one resident put it this is a town where the nightlife is back yard bonfires rather than drinking in clubs.
Placerville offers a number of parks with play areas for older as well as younger children. There is also the historic Gold Bug Park where you can explore an old gold mine and learn a bit of history about the gold rush.
Along with the recreational activities living in Placerville offers, residents are within a fairly easy commute of larger cities where they can enjoy music, art, and an active nightlife.
