San Luis Obisbo, CA is located in central California.
Often abbreviated as SLO, this city is located in San Luis Obispo County and about 190 miles North of Los Angeles. The population of the city is just over 46,000 residents. Founded by Spanish Franciscan Junípero Serra in 1772 and incorporated in 1856, this city is one of the oldest European founded cities in California.
The Origins Of SLO:
The earliest evidence of existence in San Luis Obispo dates far back as 1769 when the lands were occupied by a Native American sect, the Chumash people who lived in small villages and co-habited peacefully with soldiers and missionary men before the Mexican-American War broke out.
After the war was over San Luis Obispo was the first city to be incorporated in the newly formed San Luis Obispo County, a county that was known for its lawlessness in the early American days. People lived in newly formed huge landholdings called Ranchos after the war finished, these ranchos were given by Mexican land grant from 1837–1846.
Occupants of these ranchos began cattle rearing and were making a good living of it until the drought of 1863, which devasted most cattle ranches, breaking them up and pushing most people to other businesses such as dairies, agriculture, and mined goods.
This city has also served as a stop for travelers from northern California going to southern California and vice-versa. Due to the rise in popularity of this city as a stop, it played host to the first motel in the world, the Milestone Mo-Tel.
San Luis Obispo is home to more than 150 historic that have been designated as City of San Luis Obispo Historic Resources, three of these City’s designated historic resources have also been designated as California Historical Landmarks, eight of these City’s designated historic resources have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)
The San Luis city is part of the cities that enjoy a cool Mediterranean climate, with an average of 50 days measurable rainfall each year during the winter and of course sunshine and warmth during the long summer days. No snowfall has been recorded at all in San Luis Obisbo, although it was rumored to have witnessed a little amount of snow in 1922 (it isn’t recorded).
