The Origins Of SLO:
The earliest evidence of existence in San Luis Obispo dates far back as 1769 when the lands were occupied by a Native American sect, the Chumash people who lived in small villages and co-habited peacefully with soldiers and missionary men before the Mexican-American War broke out.
After the war was over San Luis Obispo was the first city to be incorporated in the newly formed San Luis Obispo County, a county that was known for its lawlessness in the early American days. People lived in newly formed huge landholdings called Ranchos after the war finished, these ranchos were given by Mexican land grant from 1837–1846.
Occupants of these ranchos began cattle rearing and were making a good living of it until the drought of 1863, which devasted most cattle ranches, breaking them up and pushing most people to other businesses such as dairies, agriculture, and mined goods.
