Truckee is located in northern California.
Truckee is a small mountain town in Nevada County, California. Originally named Gray’s Station in 1863, for Joseph Gray’s Roadhouse which on the Trans-Sierra Wagon road. Truckee was originally named after a Paiute Chief that settlers mistakenly mistook the Chief’s greeting for his name.
Truckee is north of Lake Tahoe near the Nevada border. covers a total area of 33.7 square miles of which 1.3 miles is water mostly from the Truckee River.
Truckee’s Main Claim to Fame:
Truckee’s main claim to fame is the perishing of the Donner Party at Truckee Lake, which has now been renamed Donner Lake. The Donner party was a group of people from Illinois who were traveling to California and decided to take a short cut through what is today Donner Pass, but a series of mistakes and early snows caught them unaware and many of the people died of starvation before the rest could be rescued.
The town takes its history seriously including the history of the Donner Party.
The community has a real rural feel about it and the people here work and play hard. Most of the people here own their own homes. There are a lot of young professionals who live here and it has great schools.
The area is perfect for those who enjoy outdoor activities such as skiing, swimming, boating, and hiking. This town has a naturally welcoming atmosphere.

Local Truckee Neighborhoods:
Almost all of the Truckee neighborhoods are good places to live because it’s just that kind of town. Here is a look at some of the neighborhoods in Truckee.
- Armstrong Tract: The Armstrong Tract is close to both Donner Lake and midtown. Many of the residents enjoy views of Donner Lake. It is an older neighborhood with nice homes that are quite affordable.
- Donner Lake Neighborhood: The Donner Lake Neighborhood has about 1500 full-time residents although the neighborhood swells considerably during the summer months. Residents here live near the lake and they find this area offers a lot of recreational opportunities including boating, fishing, and swimming.
- Tahoe/Donner Neighborhood: The Tahoe/Donner Neighborhood is located at the West End of Truckee. The neighborhood is just 5 miles from Donner Lake and less than 20 miles from Lake Tahoe as well as close to several skiing areas. There is a lot of wildlife in this neighborhood including deer, coyotes, and black bears.
- Central Truckee: Central Truckee is made up of old-fashioned homes. The neighborhood is close to several eating establishments, bars, and shops.
If you enjoy outdoor activities and want to live in a small town with some great history and many opportunities for outdoor recreation then Truckee may well be the ideal town. The Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District provides education for grades K through 12.
